Project Title:

Miami-Dade County Public Schools - Learn Ideas, Navigate Knowledge (LINK) Project

About Our Project:

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools LINK project proposes to increase broadband adoption among low-income students and their families by providing digital literacy training, low-cost refurbished computers, and broadband Internet service to 6,000 eligible students and their families. The LINK program targets the 35 schools with the highest need and includes elementary, middle, and high schools.

The program seeks to increase the relevance of broadband in people’s everyday lives through a county-wide awareness campaign that intends to reach approximately 700,000 residents and build awareness of the educational, job, and health benefits of being connected to broadband technology. This program focuses on vulnerable populations where broadband technology traditionally has been underutilized and seeks to create and maintain sustainable broadband connections. The project plans to track adoption rates over time using focus groups, usage data from the online Parent Portal, surveys, and feedback from the broadband provider.

This project is funded through a two-year grant of$3,473,490 from the U.S Department of Commerce’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program

Our Mission:

The Miami-Dade County Public Schools project also proposes to:

  • Target areas of the school district with low broadband subscribership, high poverty rates, and low education levels, including non-English speaking populations;
  • Focus on the neediest students by targeting the project's training, discounted computers, and Internet service to the households that qualify for Free or Reduced-cost school lunches;
  • Provide a school-based computer distribution and education program that will provide digital literacy training to low-income students and their families across 35 public elementary, middle, and high schools; and
  • Deploy online learning resources to enable students to supplement classwork, and allow parents to participate more closely in their child’s learning.
