What is Broadband and Why Important Message, Approach and Response (redirected from What-is-Broadband-and-Why-Important-Materials,-Approach-and-Response)

Page history last edited by Joshua Breitbart 12 years, 9 months ago

Description: As each SBA Program was setting up, we each discovered the lack of broadband explanation materials. The result is that we each created training curriculum and outreach materials explaining what broadband is, why it is important and how to get it. In this session we will share those materials, our chosen approach to the topic and responses we have received from program participants. This wiki page has a note section available so you don't forget a thing!

Time: Tuesday 11:00-12:00

Location: Allen Room

Facilitator: Samantha Schartman, OneCommunity

Notes:

Many of us work with program participants with low tech literacy levels.  So how do you begin to communicate to these participants the meaning, use, and value of Broadband?  Computers are tangible, access is not - so the valuation model and approach to training must overcome the challenge of not only technology literacy but also the intangibility of service.

In my session, we will be sharing examples of how we approach this and other challenges related to training, support material creation, and the responses we each have experienced!

How do you get people through the door?

Brighthouse - low cost connection options

Cleveland - partnership with local refurbisher + OneEconomy

Issues with Connectivity plays a part in training.  Possible options?

- internet access over power lines?

The Pew Internet & American Life Project report Home Broadband 2010 states "non-internet users are less likely than current users to say the government should place a high priority on the spread of high-speed connections." I get this. With more and more folks using the Internet, the frequency with which I explain the importance of Internet access has decreased. What I HAVE found myself doing is creating curriculum for the Connect Your Community partners that shows the value of the Internet to non-Internet users. Totally logical. If you already use the Internet, you recognize its value to you and to others. If you do not use it, how could you know the extent to which the Internet is intertwined in our daily lives?

That's absolutely fundamental to understanding digital inclusion and exclusion.
